DIY stands for do it yourself. On the web the term covers platforms that let you build a site without writing a line of code : Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, WordPress.com and a host of local tools. The DIY versus professional development debate is usually caricatural. Reality is simpler: these are two tools for two moments in a company’s life.
You are not renting software, you are renting a full service: hosting, security, updates, visual editor, templates and support, billed monthly. In exchange you have no access to the source code, you do not choose your server, and you cannot migrate the site as it is. That is a perfectly acceptable contract : as long as you know it before signing.
Our position as an agency is unambiguous: DIY is an excellent starting point and a poor destination. Start there if your offer is not yet settled. Leave as soon as the site becomes a revenue channel : and on that day, insist on keeping your URLs.
